Looking for a selection of oil portrait paintings?

There are many oil painting techniques applied to the art but above all others portrait painting oil is widely accepted to be not only the most challenging but also the most complicated too. This has become easier with time due to the variety of implements and colors now invented, which gives even more kudos to those artists who painted decades and even centuries ago without this help.

Before you even consider how hard it must be to realistically depict someone or something in an art painting, you have to consider many other factors. For instance the colors that you will be using to recreate all the tone variations of your subject as well as the different techniques needed to make for instance hair look realistic.

>>>To Find a Selection of Oil Portrait Paintings Please Click Here

These days’ teachers of art will always hark on to those who want to learn to paint, about the importance of having enough light before they even start, which puts into perspective just how hard it must have been for painting artists of old to actually have enough light to work.

When artists are using the technique of portrait painting oil, they must be sure to have the subject in the correct pose and lighted up too, ensuring that the subject is studied to the max and that mental notes have been made of all coloring and lighting. It is hard enough these days to create realistic skin tones, shadows and highlights in a painting portrait oil, let alone in previous times without our technology.

If you have had the opportunity to visit an oil painting gallery you may have learnt about how painting artists would have painted an under painting first off. This helped to block in the dark, medium and light values on the canvas painting. You may have also found out that the majority of oil portraits have always been painted layer by layer. The style of art painting used for painting hair was quite refined, for artists had to use their brush to give texture rather then focus on painting individual hairs.

Many people have tried to make art reproductions of famous oil paintings and whilst some have been successful, many have not. Oil portrait painting is honestly amongst the hardest of all paintings not forgetting how many oil painting techniques there are to learn as well. This art painting would have taken a great deal of time, practice and patience and that’s not even mentioning the skill required, especially hundreds of years ago, which must have been outstanding!

It is a widespread view that portrait oil paintings are just as varied as the portrait artists who paint them but it is also a well known fact that paintings tend to darken as time goes by and they get older. There are many cleaning techniques that you can apply when cleaning your old oil painting, but whichever way you choose, you should always make sure that you wear surgical gloves and also to have good ventilation. It is worth noting that it the painting is of particular sentimental or monetary value, you might be better off getting a conservator to do the deed.

Throughout the years, right from when the first oil painting was developed all the way through to modern day, there have been many different techniques used. An old oil painting may be one that has actually been created in layers, which is a process know as Indirect Painting, which is a method that was first adapted by Flemish painters using pigments and linseed oil. This type of painting can be used no matter if the artist is painting landscape, seascape or a portrait.

A more modern technique, however, is to use the Mixed Technique/ Method, which is where the first coat has been laid down and more often then not painted with egg tempura. This process helps to tone the canvas and cover the white of the gesso. This type of canvas painting really was fine art painting and it is thought by many that it is a shame that these days we do not have to go through the same techniques and processes to create such a painting, although many will argue that the modern oil paintings are not (and never will be) as good as the oil paintings of past ages.

>>>Find a Large Selection of Old Oil Paintings by Clicking Here

Often you will find that when looking at an old oil painting, if you look closely enough, you can see the layers. Many artists used these layering methods for it enabled them to add extra detail whilst ensuring that their paint did not crack and peel. Although this process may have taken weeks or sometimes even months to complete, it was worth it in the end and we see this from many of the old oil paintings that we have today in art galleries throughout the world.

It is somewhat amusing that what seems to be an old oil painting to us these days may not always be so when you start thinking about how long other paintings have been around, for some are truly antique, whilst others are either just getting to that stage or have yet to last another two hundred years or so especially when you consider that the oldest known to us date back from 650 A.D.

You can look at any old oil painting from this period and be amazed at how adept the ancient civilizations were at creating such paintings, although the difference here is that though vegetable oils were used, they did not appear to used linseed oil. Here, we can only assume that they did not use it because of its tendency to take a long time to dry in relation to other materials such as wax for instance.

We know that oil painting has been around for a long time as there are many examples of vintage oil painting dating back to ancient Greek times. This is interesting in itself, although we have a somewhat void of knowledge here as opposed to how much we know when it comes to later, for instance the 13th century. We know that oil paints were used in England at this time for decoration and later in the 15th century for art. One of the huge benefits of oil paint is that it is extremely hard wearing and can be painted on a number of surfaces which is why many pieces of art survive to the present day and can be seen in numerous painting galleries wherever you go.

Have a look at what others are saying about art on their sites:

Beautiful Oil Paintings by Sas Christian
She is greatly inspired on anime and likes to portrait in her oil paintings “weepy girls, punk, catholic, damaged but not broken girls, yet intelligent and independent.” I really like the expressions and the big eyes on her paintings.

Art and Oil Paintings
Whether you walk through an art gallery, or you look at oil paintings offered at an online store, one thing is certain: you will immediately know if you like a painting. Perhaps the scene creates an emotional sensation within you.

Art Work Partners
Art Work Partners revives the centuries-old technique of pietre dure (inlaying stones in beautifully intricate partners) for modern times. This artistic medium descended from Byzantine mosaics but found its greatest expression.

Are you trying to find landscape oil paintings?

The internet has given us art lovers the chance to search for paintings all across the world. Where one day we were restricted to a local gallery we can now buy from any online store and have the painting delivered straight to our home.

This has totally changed the way I shop for art. I have always been keen on a bargain and like to know that the money I invest is covered by the cost of the painting, but since the internet I have been able to find and buy paintings for a lot cheaper that I was before.

So where are these sites that I use? There are a few that I look through but I always start on the same site as it is the one that I have had the most success with, having found a number of paintings at amazing prices.

>>>Click Here To Find A Massive Selection Of Landscape Paintings

An oil painting can make a huge difference to a room if the right painting is hung in the right place. Some walls cry out for a landscape painting while others are more suited to oil portrait paintings. Of course, we all have our own personal taste and belief as to what looks best where but there are some examples where a landscape frame is better suited, such as above a mantelpiece.

Oil paintings are not just for use in the home with many offices, shops and restaurants also displaying quality paintings. Many public places such as the ones mentioned will often display reproductions of classic paintings by some of the most famous artists the world has ever seen. Artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Vincent Van Gogh have painted some of the most sought after reproductions available today.

Van Gogh’s Sunflowers is probably the most reproduced painting of all time, probably because it is seen as an uplifting painting that brings a smile to your face and a happy feeling inside. It also happens to be one of the most expensive paintings ever sold and this also gives it an interesting feel.

Many people prefer to have an original painting even if it has been painted by an unknown artist. Owning an original oil painting gives a room in your house something that no other room in the world has. I have a number of friends that will only hang original art in their home as they believe it adds something that a reproduction cannot.

I don’t take this view and instead choose to have a mixture of original art as well as the occasional reproduction. After all paintings are there to be enjoyed and good art is good art, so if I can find a good landscape oil painting that has been reproduced I will buy it because I like it and looks good in my house. But I will equally be interested in a painting by an unknown artist if I like it and have a spare wall for it to hang on.

Most of the walls in my house are covered with landscape paintings of all different sizes. In fact my dining room is the only room in my house that I don’t hang any landscape pictures, instead choosing to position a number of portrait oil paintings on each wall.

Are you looking to buy a decorative frame to house a new painting you have recently purchased?

If you have bought a beautiful new oil painting that doesn’t come with a frame then you will want to get it framed as soon as possible. After all, you don’t want to risk damage and I’m sure you would like to hang it somewhere in your home at the earliest opportunity. But what is the best way to frame a new or antique oil painting at a good price?

The first thing you need to do is a buy a frame that your new painting will fit in!

>>> For a Large Selection of Frames for Oil Paintings Click Here!

The majority of oil paintings will be painted on canvas and should come already stretched. If so, they can be housed in a wooden frame or mounted on to wood. If your painting does not arrive stretched then you would be best advised to take it to an expert, who will be able to stretch it for you. If you can find someone locally to do it for you, rather than sending it off in the post, then I suggest you do that where possible.

However the painting arrives, you will need to measure the size of the canvas in order to know what size frame to buy. Please see the chart near the bottom of this page that shows typical canvas sizes. If your new oil painting size does not appear on the chart then you may struggle to find a frame to fit and may need to have a custom frame made.

If your oil painting is a standard size then you will have no trouble framing it yourself. You should first buy an oil painting frame that is suitable and shows your new master piece off well. To have a look at a selection of frames for oil paintings click here. If you find frames that come with a glass cover and backing board that’s fine, but you will not need to use them as oil paintings should be left open and never covered by glass. Oil paintings would never look as good as they do if they were covered by glass, but they should also be allowed to breathe.

If your new frame does have a glass cover than all you need to do is remove it. Not quite as simple as it sounds but it’s not that difficult. You will find glazer points holding the glass and back board in place that you can remove with a little bit of effort by using a needle nose plier. If the frame came with any kind of hanging material then I suggest you also discard that as I don’t believe they are the most effective method for hanging.

From this point you will need to buy two mirror hangers, two d-ring hangers, four #8 wood screws, wall hooks to hand the painting and a suitable length of hanging wire that should measure 1.5 times the width of your frame.

You can now put the canvas on the back of the frame using the mirror hanger clips by screwing them in on either side of the frame using the #8 wood screws. This can be on the right and left sides of the frame, or at the top and bottom. You will now need to measure about one third of the way down the frame from top to bottom, attaching the d-ring hangers also using the wood screws. You must not screw the wood screws in too tight as they will need to be able to move.

Now thread one end of the hanging wire through one of the d-ring hangers and tie the end firmly to ensure it won’t come out. Then thread it through the other d-ring hanger ensuring that it is not too tight – there should be some slack to allow you to hang it with ease. One you have done this you should tighten at both ends to ensure the hanging wire cannot come lose and you painting is ready to be hung!

For a list of people who sell oil painting frames please click here.

Have a look at what other websites are saying about frames:

Choosing the Right Frame For A Painting
If the collector wants to frame the painting after they have purchased it, they are free to do so. In fact, asking to see the work after it has been framed may provide an opportunity for further contact to enhance your relationship.

You can navigate through the site by using the menus on the sides of the page. Also don’t hesitate to follow the links you see in bold throughout each post to learn more about the product being spoken about.

I hope you find the information I provide valuable and helpful.

All the best,
Simon
